Seizing the Day- Slovenia’s “Carpe Diem"

When us as Americans think about national identity, we tend to picture flags, founding documents, fireworks, or political debates. However, at the Eurovision Song Contest, national identity is performed through three minutes of music, lighting, language, and camera angles. On that stage, culture becomes choreography. Slovenia’s 2023 entry, Carpe Diem by Joker Out at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest may initially sound like a breezy indie-pop anthem about living in the moment. But underneath its infectious rhythm there lies a carefully constructed statement about contemporary Slovenian identity. Strengthening the linguistic pride and proudly owning European cosmopolitanism. In my previous assignment, I contended that the national identity that is predominant in Slovenia is based on three pillars. Linguistic differentiation, post-Yugoslav nationhood, and the powerful need to establish itself as modern and European. Carpe Diem serves to strengthen the national id...

Slovenia Blog Post 1

Blog Post 1 February 4, 2026 The National Self When Slovenia made their first ever appearance in the Eurovision stage in 1993, they were a newly independent country making its voice heard on a European cultural stage. Welcome to Slovenia on the Eurovision Stage!!!

Welcome to my Blog. This site will focus on Slovenia and It's recent participation in the Eurovision contest. I will explore the country's culture, identity, and creativity through music and performance.  Slovenia is a small country in South Central Europe, Often being associated with the Balkans, and bordered by four different countries. These countries being Italy, Hungary, Austria, and Croatia. After gaining independence in 1991, Slovenia made its Eurovision debut in 1993. While the country has not yet won the contest, It's entries often standout for the thoughtful, artistic, and eye catching performances.  Personally I chose Slovenia because I’ve always wanted to visit it after one of my close friends described the country as "incredibly beautiful". Before starting this project, I honestly knew nothing  about Slovenia’s Eurovision history, and Eurovision history in general. Which made me very open to learn and understand any country that arose. Eurovision offe...
